Metabolomic Diagnostics

Metabolomic diagnostics provides in-depth insight into the body’s complex biochemical processes. Using advanced analytical techniques, it maps metabolic activity that influences both physical and mental health. This type of diagnostics is particularly valuable for identifying underlying contributors to chronic illness, stress-related disorders, and psychiatric conditions such as anxiety, depression, and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

How Metabolomic Diagnostics Works

Metabolomic testing analyzes a wide spectrum of small molecules—metabolites—such as amino acids, lipids, sugars, and organic acids. These compounds reflect the body’s current metabolic state. By evaluating them, it becomes possible to identify imbalances related to energy metabolism, oxidative stress, inflammation, and toxic exposures.

State-of-the-art technologies such as LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry) are used, enabling highly precise, multi-parameter analysis of up to 70 metabolites from a single sample.

When Is Metabolomic Testing Relevant?

Metabolomic diagnostics is especially useful in cases involving:

  • Stress-related disorders
Chronic stress can disrupt metabolism, including cortisol regulation and neurotransmitter function (e.g., serotonin, dopamine).
  • Psychiatric conditions
In depression, anxiety, or burnout, disruptions in tryptophan metabolism and neurotransmitter balance may play a significant role.
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia
These disorders are often associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and altered cellular energy production.
  • Digestive disturbances
Gut microbiota imbalances and gut-brain axis dysfunction can affect both immune and mental health.
  • Environmental burden
Exposure to heavy metals and environmental toxins may lead to oxidative stress and chronic low-grade inflammation.

Included Analyses

The metabolomic panel may include:

  • Cortisol daily profile
Saliva-based measurement of cortisol at multiple points throughout the day to assess stress load.
  • Neurotransmitter profile
Urinary measurement of adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin to evaluate neurochemical balance.
  • Tryptophan metabolism
Analysis of tryptophan breakdown into serotonin, melatonin, and kynurenine compounds. Disruption of this pathway may contribute to mood disorders and sleep disturbances.
  • Mitochondrial function markers
Indicators such as citrate, lactate/pyruvate ratio, and NAD levels help assess mitochondrial energy production.
  • Inflammatory and oxidative stress markers
Measurement of proinflammatory cytokines and indicators of oxidative and nitrosative stress.
  • Microbiome analysis
Evaluation of gut microbiota composition and its metabolic impact, including TMAO levels (linked to inflammation and cardiovascular risk).

Benefits of Metabolomic Diagnostics

  • Holistic insight
Provides an overview of the interaction between the nervous system, immune response, and metabolic activity.
  • Personalized treatment
Enables tailored interventions based on metabolic findings, focusing on nutrition, supplements, and lifestyle changes.
  • Early identification of imbalances
Detects hidden burdens and risk factors before overt disease develops.

How the Test Is Performed

Testing is carried out through urine and/or saliva samples, which are sent to a specialized laboratory for analysis. The results offer a detailed picture of the body’s current metabolic state and guide the development of individualized treatment strategies.
